Good Practice Seminars
Seminars to be presented during the morning
AM1 - Partnership Working in Action: The Bradford Home Birth Workshops
Home birth is an often controversial and much discussed issue, particularly with falling home birth rates across the country and the recent findings from the Birthplace study.
This seminar tells the story of how supervisors in one service with a very low home birth rate (<0.5%) worked in partnership with women and their families and colleagues to make home birth a real choice.
Alison Brown – Bradford Royal Infirmary
AM2 - Getting it right from the start: care at admission in labour
This exciting seminar presents the results of recent region-wide evidence into practice consultation exercise. Emergent key interventions will be shared, and as part of the seminar participants will be asked to explore how they could improve the admission in labour episode in their own area, based on the key interventions and using innovation science methods
Cathy Burke and Georgina Lessing-Turner - Yorkshire and Humber Health Innovation and Education Cluster (HIEC)
AM3 - Dynamic supervision in action -lipstick optional!
Supervision is challenging, how better then than to look at practice in real time, real settings, real teams, and with a video camera!
Challenging supervisors to explore the ways in which supervision can be provided in a supportive environment is key to developing collaborative relationships which impact on practice.
Elaine Madden and Melanie McMechan
AM4 - Midwives, Drugs, Exemptions – Our local SOM team response
NMC circular 06/2010 detailed significant changes to the Midwives Exceptions. These changes posed considerable challenges to the local SOM team in supporting midwives and students in practice. This seminar focuses on the development and use of a self directed workbook for midwives to facilitate on-going fitness for practice and the wider implications for the Trust and SOM team arising from the new legislation.
Cathy Rogers, SOM/Senior Lecturer, University of Hertfordshire and Consultant Midwife Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Hospital’s Trusts
Carole Yearley, Principal Lecturer Midwifery, University of Hertfordshire, currently on secondment as Assistant LSAMO, London
AM5 - Working with Women and their Families
Engaging with users of maternity services can help to ensure that services meet the needs of the women and families.
Through an informal presentation we will highlight work of LSA Lay reviewers in Wales.
This will be followed by open forum discussion on utilising user experiences in the work of Supervision of Midwives.
Claire Foster and Jackie Foster – Wales
AM6 - “Hypnobirthing proves hit in NHS Hospitals”
2 hospital midwives from different parts of the country have introduced hypnobirthing. Having a comfortable, relaxing birth is a top priority for women and with hypnobirthing, women discover that severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour. Women learn how to put them-selves back in control of their birth, be more confident and have a better birth experience.
Gilly Gibbin and Susan Gibson
AM7 - ‘Supervisor of the day’
The supervisors have dedicated supervision time in clinical areas to work proactively with midwives in an innovative ‘supervisor of the day’ scheme. The aim being to improve quality of care, facilitate collaborative working and raising midwives’ confidence and esteem by offering guidance and support whilst also monitoring standards of care
Diane Goodwin – Dewsbury and District Hospital
AM8 - A narrow escape!
Supervisors of midwives are increasingly working with women who choose home birth against advice.
Some of these cases require intensive planning in order to support midwives and to ensure safeguarding of mothers and babies.
We would like to share how we ensure an integrated approach that prevents midwives working in isolation.
Anthea Gregory-Page and Jackie Copson – Royal Shrewsbury Hospital
AM 9 - Cultural transition to maternity services in the UK’ - Supervisors supporting a changing workforce
Following the expansion of EU member states and migrants seeking employment in the UK, the Trust experienced a significant increase in the birth rate and diversity in the population. Recruitment was intensified and midwives from the EU employed. It soon became apparent that there were differences in practice, culture and skills. In partnership with the University of Northampton, an accredited course was designed for these midwives to apply their knowledge and skills within the context of UK midwifery practice.
Krystyna Grey and Linda Matthews – Northampton Genral Hospital NHS Trust
Ann Kingscott and Natasha Carr, Birmingham City University
AM10 - The Midwifery Statutory Supervisory Review Meeting: Fit for Purpose?
This seminar will examine selected, emerging findings from an ongoing research study which explores whether the statutory supervisory review meeting is ‘fit for purpose’ within the current context of regulation and practice. During the seminar delegates will be encouraged to critically review their own practice in light of these findings.

Seminars to be presented during the afternoon
PM1 - Supervisor’s Embrace the Challenge !!
The supervisors at East Cheshire NHS Trust have risen to the challenge of meeting National and Local agenda’s by providing innovative and dynamic ways of working . One of our most challenging actions was the implementation of a weekly supervisor’s clinic, which is responsive to changes in a modern maternity service and demonstrates excellence in midwifery supervision.
Lorraine Perry and Bev Walsh
PM2 - Opening Pandora’s Box: Supporting midwives reflective development.
Come along and experience a practice focused reflective tool for midwives. It offers space for individual creativity followed by a little structure for reflective questioning and moves the midwife on to consider what skills, practice knowledge and or professional qualities need development
Dr Jen Leamon, Coordinator MSc Professional Practice
PM3 - Midwives Building a Future within Reconfiguration Of Maternity Services in Greater Manchester
Supervisors of midwives conducted a consultation with midwives working in a Greater Manchester maternity unit planned to be closed in November 2011. Midwives wanted opportunities away from the clinical area to create a positive way forward, to find a path to empowerment. They wanted to meet colleagues from other Trusts to share innovations and ideas, to feel significant within the overpowering machinery that inevitably is reconfiguration. This seminar outlines the approach we took as supervisors to enable midwives through the turbulence of change.
Dr Lesley Choucri, Jeanne Lythgoe, Anna Sherliker, Supervisors of Midwives, University of Salford.
PM4 - “IN OUR CARE” – MATERNITY USER ENGAGEMENT EVENT
Are you fulfilling your role in actively engaging with women to influence service development?
Our dynamic seminar will provide you with a proactive, progressive approach to working with women culminating in a maternity user event. We will share our model for the events’ preparation, organisation, evaluation, and how partnerships are being taken forward.

PM5 - "Help from Hogwarts"
Following an increase in the numbers, and role, of support workers, we realised that we needed to provide some extra training to help them assist with obstetric emergencies, A training package has been developed based on the pnemonic HOGWART and backed with up this on a laminated card.
Gillian Murnane and Ilona Ramsey
PM6 – Objectivity Rules
This seminar aims to be stimulating, if not controversial in discussing approaches to maintain objectivity and consistency in the supervision of midwives, including; offering supervisees a change of named supervisor, external mentorship for prospective supervisors, external auditors on LSA audit visit teams and advocating externally led supervisory investigations. Can we be “too close for comfort”?
Anne-Marie Henshaw SoM and Carol Paeglis, LSAMO
PM7 - Ready…, steady, …go…
To support newly registered midwives we, through the supervisory framework, have developed a pack “Ready….Steady… Go “. This provides practical information on The Code, The Midwives Rules and Standards, registration, Intention to Practice (ITP), Prep, maintaining a Personal Portfolio and preparation for the first meeting with the Supervisor of Midwives.

PM8 - The cost of remuneration for Supervision-Can it be sustained?
Our seminar will focus on the results of our national survey, which evaluated arrangements for the remuneration of SOM in England, the relationship between remuneration, recruitment and retention for SOM’s. The cost, variation and implications of this will be explored, as well the factors that SOM teams perceive to impact on the recruitment process for new SOM’s. The profile of current SOM teams in England will also be shared.
Cathy Rogers and Carole Yearley
PM9 – Birth Afterthoughts
The Birth Afterthoughts’ Service has been instrumental in improving outcomes for mothers, babies and their families. Birth Afterthoughts offers all women the opportunity to discuss their birth process with a midwife, not just those whom professionals felt had experienced a traumatic birth and can be accessed at any time after birth.
Heather Eggleston and Frances Franklin

Is your team comprised of supervisors from managerial, education and clinical backgrounds and does this cause conflict on occasions?
Wish that your team of supervisors were a little bit happier in their roles?
We Did!!
